Directing is sort of a misnomer when it comes to documentary filmmaking. The things being directed are all happening behind the camera. There is no directing nature, merely capturing it. My job as ‘director’ was to create an actionable plan for every possible scenario that could happen while out in the field, and know when to employ those plans. This was the most learning-curve heavy part of this process. Having a plan is one thing, enacting the plan in the moment is another. There were a few times that a shot got missed because of a hesitated decision to set up the gear.
