Most projects of video production have a director. As most know, the director is the head of the project, and who’s vision, tastes, and desires guide where the product is heading. In terms of this project, there is only one crew member total: me. So, while I am the director, I am also the audio recorder, the camera man, the editor, and the writer. Every piece of this production has been set up, recorded, edited, and fixed by yours truly. And while that requires a lot less communication with other human beings, it also requires a more in-depth attention to detail by one single person, as well as the technical know-how in all these different facets.
I don’t even have a preference for large vs. small crews. While small crews have the benefit of less schedules to work around and fewer potential weak links, it also places more responsibility on each person, and they may end up wearing multiple hats at one time. And then here I am, wearing all the hats, all at the same time. And I must say, it’s not a bad experience, all things considered. While I wouldn’t say I’m an expert in any one facet of production, I am above average in most aspects, which has been enough up to this point. My main shortcoming is the attention to detail part of the equation. I do the systems check, but I don’t have the greatest eye for detail, and I have missed a few small details that would have made the footage that much better.
